After begging his dad to finally hunt by himself for the first time, dad gave in and put him in a stand for the evening hunt. The stand I put him in is known more for producing hogs as oppose to deer, and I was thinking it would be a good place for him to get his first hog, not thinking he might run across a big buck. As I was getting out of my deer stand at dark I received a call on the 2 way radio from my son that he had shot a monster, still thinking he was talking about a big hog I didn’t even ask if it was a deer or not. When I got to his deer stand he explained to me that he shot the biggest buck he had ever seen in his life to my surprise of course. Since he is not a very experienced hunter I took the "monster buck comment with a grain of salt". We searched for the deer for about an hr in the dark, where I could find no blood trail, so we started to think that he had missed the deer, but planned to come back in the morning and look again to be sure. And of course you can imagine the array of emotions that night going from being so excited to very down as he thought of the possibility that he had missed this big buck. Next morning we started to look again, and still found no evidence of blood so just to be sure we started to canvas the area, and finally after about 2hrs we were almost ready to give up. Then a fellow hunter that was helping us search (Jarkko Peltonen from Finland) found the big buck, across the river piled up in a draw, in the deepest jungle on the ranch. As you can imagine my son's emotional rollercoaster had now peeked to a level of excitement I cant even imagine, and I was so proud to be there with him and share in this amazing experience. Special Thxs for the persistence of the Finnish woodsmen :) Thx, Matt Gantt (proud father)
